Related News List by Taxonomy Block

The Related News List by Taxonomy Block is used exclusively on the layout of all news article pages. It can display a list of related news articles to the article being viewed.

Requires News A collection of features or functionality that can be enabled on sites. WDS has made several optional modules available to site administrators to enable on their site. For example, the "News" module enables the News content type and provide a News List Block for displaying news on a page.

This block requires that the News module be enabled on your site.

Features

  • Similar feature set to the standard News List Block.
  • Can be placed on the default layout that affects all news articles.
  • The news list is generated by finding other news articles that have at least one shared A term is an individual item that belongs to some taxonomy vocabulary, typically used for categorizing content. For example, a vocabulary "Colors" may have terms in it "Red", "Green", "Blue". with the article that is viewed.
  • Specify which Used primarily for categorizing content, a vocabulary defines a specific grouping of taxonomy terms. Some default vocabularies exist on all sites, but WDS can create custom vocabularies if needed. Synonymous with categories. (e.g. News Category, Sitewide Category, etc) to use when deriving the relationship with other news articles.

How to Use

This block must be added to the layout of news articles. Since news articles cannot have individual layout overrides, you must edit the layout for all news articles and add the block:

  1. Log in as a user with the Site Admin role.
  2. Visit Configuration > System > Modules from the admin toolbar.
  3. Find the News module in the list and click the Settings button
  4. In the modal window that's opened, scroll down and press the Modify detail page layout button
  5. Below the existing Content Fields block, press Add block
  6. From the list, select Related News List by Taxonomy
  7. Configure the block as you wish and press Add block
    1. Note the section at the bottom of the configuration form where you provide the taxonomy vocabulary to use when finding related articles.
  8. Press Save layout
  9. View a news article that has at least term from the vocabulary you selected in step #7. Other news articles that include at least one of the same terms will be shown.
